The Saturday Morning Post: What’s next for the Raptors?
Posted by Arsenalist on June 28, 2008
Let’s look at the changes to our roster so far:
Additions: Roko Ukic, Jermaine O’Neal, Nathan Jawai
Subtractions: TJ Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston, Carlos Delfino
Bryan Colangelo is working towards having a “nice, lean roster” for next year which sounds like a good enough idea. What he doesn’t mention is having an athletic roster that is capable of providing consistent defensive stops and can play man-defense out on the perimeter without needing help from the paint. As you recall against the Magic, we got undone because of guard and small forward penetration. And as you might also recall, we were poor at close-outs and interior and perimeter rotations all season long. None of that has been addressed yet and granted the summer is long, however, we don’t have the resources to fix this team.
Good defensive news first: There is a defensive silver-lining to the Jermaine O’Neal trade and its his ability to play help defense. Consider this scenario: The opposing guard just beat Calderon to the paint. Pause. Last year Bosh came and helped out leaving the weak side wide open for any opposing player to step in for a layup or foul. Next year Bosh can actually come out and help his guards whilst feeling confident that Jermaine O’Neal is there to back him up and not leaving him out to dry (shake head at Bargnani). So see, the trade actually helped us on both ends of the floor.
Back to the issue at hand though, what do we need to do to become lean, athletic and a better defensive team in a strong East. The bad news is that we’ll only have about $5-$6 million to spend after paying all our existing players, this of course assuming that we want to stay under the salary cap which is going to be known in July. Speaking realistically and glancing at the 2008 NBA Free Agent list, you’ll notice that there aren’t any quick fixes to this problem. Sure there’s Mickael Pietrus, Josh Childress and J.R. Smith but throwing the MLE at them is hardly going to prevent their teams from matching the offer (assuming they sign the offer-sheet). There’s also Bonzi Wells who happens to be an unrestricted free agent but I’d rather have Jamario Moon.
There’s also Ron Artest who might opt out of his contract with the Kings. But unless him and Jermaine O’Neal shared the same bed on road-trips, I hardly see him picking the Raptors over other suitors like the Lakers. This one’s a no-brainer. This leaves us with fulfilling our needs via trade and now that TJ Ford and Rasho’s expiring contract are no more, we’re left with the likes of Jason Kapono, Joey Graham, Anthony Parker and Kris Humphries as trade bait. Aside from Jason Kapono there isn’t anything here to get excited about and frankly, I’d rather keep Kapono here and see what he can do with two double-team threats on the team. A contending team or two might be interested in Parker for his veteran presence and mid-range game but that’s about it. That’s all the ammunition we have. All that’s left is to figure out who is desperate enough to take our 5M MLE and run with it. Don’t you get the feeling we didn’t get enough out of this draft?
The more and more you think about it the more you’ll realize that next season, much like last season, will be dependent on what Andrea Bargnani can do for us and how well he can guard his position. If he’s able to play the SF effectively for 15-20 minutes a game, it’ll change the entire dynamics of the Raptors. If he can become more of a slashing type player, our problems will decrease because he has the ability to create off the dribble and get opponents into foul trouble. If he can have a Toni Kukoc type impact on this team, we can aim for home court in the first round.
There’s also the issue of guard defense. I haven’t seen nearly enough of Roko Ukic to say whether he can effectively spell Calderon through the course of a season. At 6′ 5″, I am hoping his defense is better than Calderon’s and that he can remedy some of our penetration issues. I thought Keyon Dooling would’ve been a nice signing for us because of his hounding defensive play and ability to knock down shots. Then again you have to give Ukic a shot and see just exactly what he can do, he’s 24 and not getting any younger.
There is one player that I haven’t give up on yet: Joey Graham. Before you close the window, consider this: When has Graham gotten any consistent playing time under Sam Mitchell? Never. Has he been afforded the same leeway has Jamario Moon, Anthony Parker, Andrea Bargnani or even Carlos Delfino? No. His trade value is practically zero so you’re not going to get anything for him on the market but he can still give us something. We tend to forget that he’s a strong, athletic player that when playing with confidence, can slash to the rim, grab rebounds, play hard and when the lighting is right, knock mid-range jumpers down. I’m not even looking at him for offense, I think he can help us defensively and needs to be given a fair shot in training cap and at the start of the season. Call me crazy.
Note to those of you who would’ve loved to see Gerald Wallace on the Raptors, here’s the game tally for his career: 54, 47, 37, 70, 55, 72 and 62. Sure he puts up good numbers but its while playing for a terrible team. You can’t expect him to replicate those numbers here and for what its worth, defensively, I’ll take Moon over him any day.
The Raptors get a 8/10 for their draft according to Yahoo Sports. Figure that one out.
Have a nice weekend.

I’m assuming that Childress and JR Smith’s option would be picked up and resigned by their respective teams, they’ll be stupid if they don’t. If they somehow do not get resigned as FA’s, Colangelo should jump all over a guy like Childress.
Azabuike(sp?)or Petrius seem like viable options for the MLE. Athletic, fast, slasher. It wouldn’t hurt to throw money that way considering that GS has a handful trying to sign Ellis and ‘the man Bargnani wishes to be’ Biedrins. Bottom line is, I just don’t feel exactly comfortable heading in the 08′ – 09′ season with the same guards who got severely burned by opposing SG’s/SF’s. Though signing these guys would have minimal effect at best, it wouldn’t hurt to try new things.
And is Delfino gone for sure? Last time I heard, he and Calderon both got put on Qualifying offers.
Joey I just don’t see happening… he’s got his fair share of chances in the past actually, he has shown good flashes (has a nice 13-15 feet jumper) but he doesn’t know how to slash, or even if he does, draws an offensive foul. Man he is using his body to waste with his kind of physique.

The qualifying offer is a formality which just gives the Raptors the right to match, it’s by no means intent to resign. The article linked points to him headed out and there were reports elsewhere last week linking him to Europe.
I think Joey needs 20mpg for 15 games in a row to start the season. It might kill us but we’ll see what he can do.
Total agreement on the second paragraph.

granted joey hasn’t been given the same leeway as the others, but the guy doesn’t seem motivated all arse. i don’t know if smitch would last 15 games if he gave joey 20mpg.
say what you want about wallace, and i know the guy has been injured, but the raptors still need a starting 3, end of story. moon doesn’t do enough to spread the floor, he doesn’t slash nearly enough to free up space in the paint for bosh and o’neal or create open shots for the shooters.
fielding this team, without any other additions could win the raptors 50 games, but without perimeter defense, it is only a matter of time before all that penetration starts to create easy scores for whoever we are playing.

and if they can’t get a guy on the wing who can create his own shots…welcome to the black hole on the offensive end of o’neal and bosh holding the ball for 8 seconds before they make their move.

Wow… this post is oozing with optimism. Something this corner has none of at this moment.
JO will be a fouling machine not a defensive presence. Those days are long gone.
Joey sucks even more then Parker. Hope he packs his bags too. 20 mpg? Are you out of your mind? He sucks. He looks lost out there.
Good riddance Delfino. Nice not knowing ya. You suck. Nice hair.
So, Roko coming over is a sure thing?
Agree with commenter on last post. Jose will go down in a heap at some point this year and then you can kiss the whole thing goodbye. Didn’t he have injury issues last year at some point?
And I have no idea why ppl have written off Moon after his ROOKIE season.. yet Joey who’s been here a 100 years and done NOTHING should be starting and getting in for 2q? HUH? Why is everyone thinking Moon has reached his ceiling? Far from it, IMO.
Bargs is done here. Spending the summer at home will make him realize this whole NBA thing sucks. He could be living at home, be a superstar, make more money, here he’s just an idiot because he got picked no1. I don’t blame him. Stay at home Andrea.

Flux, the man is 29 and by all accounts healthy again. Everything is dependent on him being healthy and mobile, if that happens and Bargnani regains his first year touch and we sure up the perimeter D (the most important thing!), I’m confident we’ll be a decent team. If you look back at last year we sucked at rebounding the ball and letting G/Fs blow by us, I’m confident that adding JO to the roster addresses the rebounding need to a degree, now its a question of getting some athletic D help. BTW, I think we could’ve gotten more out of this draft…
BC has a lot of work to do and hasn’t got much to work with. Let’s see him earn his cheque this summer. Then there’s Mitchell but that guy deserves his own Saturday Morning Post.
My main point is that Bargnani’s role in how good we’ll be next year is HUGE because I don’t see us making any major splashes in the summer.
Maybe I’m expecting too much of Graham.

I see the positives in what JO brings to the table, I just think people are putting too much faith into him and the immediate impact he will have on the team. I guess I would have to see him play first before I put my money on the table. It’s so very 50 50 right now.
BC probably thinks he pulled of the trade of his tenure here in TO. As I said before, this situation is now beyond effed. I also don’t understand why ppl are crunching numbers and looking at the summer of 2010 as something good for us. Why? What, we are going to sign LeBron AND Wade? We know BC (or the ownership) is not one to throw money around and until that happens any talk of playoffs and success therein is idiotic. The teams that have made the Finals in the last few years are the ones that opened up the checkbook (MIA, BOS, DAL) The others put together good teams and we sure as fuck are not doing that.
I’ve said before October is a while away, but like you say, the majority of the work is done. Again, we are effed. IMO, everything rests on JO and, even more then everything, on Jose. Whatever Bargs does will not be enough for anyone and people are licking their chops waiting to bash him.
Also, you seem to be saying that now the whole season rests on his shoulders. IMO this all rests on Jose “I get what I want” Calderon. You got rid of TJ, you are going to get paid, NOW DELIVER. I am sure BC got you everything you were looking for..it’s all on you champ! Get’er done. People are calling this guy the second coming of Jesus. Let’s see him perform these miracles now that there is no one left to point the finger at. It’s all you buddy. And rest assured if/when things go wrong, he will not get blamed for it either.. it will be Moon, Joey, Bargs, Bosh etc. getting roasted.
It’s no secret you have like Joey and see potential in him. Your solution, understandably, is to give him more minutes. I guess, what some of us are saying is that in the limited time he was given, there were very few moments he showed he deserved more.
I am not expecting anything out of this team. The East is stacked, regardless of people wanting to admit or not. Yes, I can see on paper we should be OK. But man oh man.. I don’t see it happening. Clearly. We took steps backwards not forward.

The problem with Graham is that while he may do a few good things like you mentioned in your post, a few times, he doesn’t do it consistently. Giving him more PT might be considered a solution but unfortunately not for Graham because thats not his biggest issue. The biggest problem with Graham isn’t that he doesn’t have confidence or enough playing time, its that he isn’t smart enough to figure out what he does wrong. I think that is why he doesn’t get the playing time to fit his supposed potential.
All he needs to do is find and accept a role. In my opinion he decide to be 100% tuned to being a defence presence with one or two go to offensive moves that he can use only if the opportunity presents itself to not force his offense. Unfortunately, Graham thinks that he deserves a spot in the NBA and probably blames his lack of output on limited minutes and never getting a chance and will continue to take shots at the wrong time, be confused on defense still after 3 seasons, and pick up defensive fouls.

Flox .. why can’t you and the rest of the Moronto tribal honkers just be happy that the NBA is in town … and just enjoy watching all the other great NBA teams as they come to Moronto???
If you expect a ‘championship’ team in Moronto in the foreseeable future, you are deluding because this is as good as it will get ..!!!
fluxland said
whywearecalledraptors: agreed. That is what I am saying about Joey. No clue what he is doing out there. More minutes will only expose everything you said.
FUQ…I’m pretty sure it’s obvious from my comments I have no expectations. Then again it was BC that promised a chip contending team when he got here. I am not going “to be happy the NBA is in town”. It’s been 15 years. I am done being happy the NBA is in town. I enjoy watching other teams coming to town! (see my pic?) I’m just tired of becoming the Clippers, Hawks, Grizzlies of the NBA. I will not settle for crap. I’d rather we were the Utah Jazz – constant quality product on the floor with more then reasonable dreams of winning it all, yet never doing so.
Yes, the reality may be that this is as good as it gets. As is the fact that while so, I will have moments where I bitch and moan. I leave the optimism to Arsenalist.

flx … then stfu about a championship Ratpor team … because it must be egregiously evident even to ululating you that the Ratpors are only the residual repository for unproven draft pics and aged/injured/limited veteran players with fat contracts…!!!!
I mean just look at the team’s totally histrionic history ….!!!!

FUK…. so what if its evident? Lay down and accept? Maybe in your neck of the bigoted woods… not around here.
And clearly you are not so happy about it either.. since you keep bring it up. Whats is your point and agenda in trying to convince everyone of this?
You make no sense.
I told you before and I’ll tell you again.. you see my name… skip over and ignore.. bitching at me will get you nowhere.
So YOU stuf and gfy.
