The Toronto Raptors Blog with an Arsenal touch

The Celtics are just better than the Raptors. It’s that simple. Plus, Bargnani might be a bust.

Boston Celtics 90, Toronto Raptors 77

That was hard to watch and don’t let the score fool you, this game wasn’t even close. The Celtics come into our building missing one of their big guns and blow us out of the water while we play like stiffs in awe of our opponents rather than go for the kill in a statement game at home. We didn’t match Boston’s fire or energy and ended up getting beat by Boston role players such as Rondo and Posey. We couldn’t adapt to Garnett who whenever pressured by a double team always managed to find a shooter who was left wide open because of a late defensive rotation. The Raptors achilles heel. Holes this big in your defense can only be compensated for by having a great offense which wasn’t there today, instead we had the same perimeter oriented approach towards scoring that only works on occasion (see second half of Indiana game) and can’t be relied upon to score against a good defense on a consistent basis. Did the Raptors honestly think they’d be able to mount an Indiana-like comeback against Boston? That shit happens once or twice a year if you’re lucky.

The bottom line is that Boston is just better than us. They have more star power, better fitting role players, a coach that understands the strengths and weaknesses of the team and does a good job of exploiting the former and hiding the latter. Doc Rivers is by no means a great coach but over the years he’s learned how to deploy the resources he’s given to good use. James Posey, Eddie House and Rajon Rondo are all great fits in a Boston team where everybody seems to know how to approach the game and know what their role is. Contrast this to our style where the first offensive possession of the game is a Jamario Moon fadeaway and where despite all our coaching staff’s efforts we can’t get our #1 pick a clean look to save his life. The disparity between the two clubs is evident in our 0-3 record against them. This is no fluke, they are better than us both player and coaching wise. We are a good team, they are a contender. They have Eastern Conference champions written all over them, we can at best hope for a second round birth.

Let’s talk about Bargnani. If it looks like a bust, plays like a bust, acts like a bust, it’s probably a _____. You fill in the blank. He looks awful but I’ve decided to analyze him in an entirely different post coming in the next week hopefully. Suffice to say every time he touches the ball he embarrasses himself and the GM who drafted him. To put it bluntly it looks like Kris Humphries might have a better career than Bargnani. The Italian can’t seem to grasp simple basketball concepts and is repeating the same defensive and offensive mistakes over and over again, his confidence is so low that I wouldn’t trust him in a jumpball against Rondo. Besides the occasional three point shooting he hasn’t lived up to the expectations and hype that the media and the Raptors franchise has shoved down our throats. Right now it’s turning out to be a disaster pick and I can’t even blame the coaching staff for not “bringing him along” because its clear that the problems that plague him have much more to do with mental makeup, confidence and ability more than incorrect utilization by the coach.

In this paragraph I’ll try my best to summarize what we did wrong. Forgive me if the grammar and sentence structure is a little of. Anthony Parker either missing open shots or taking bad shots. Chris Bosh taking too many jumpers when guarded by the likes of Kentrick Perkins and Glen Davis, didn’t end up having an impact on the game. Jose Calderon doing nothing to take away Rajon Rondo’s penetration. Non-existent rotational defense when double teaming Kevin Garnett – Rondo was left wide open, somebody should cover for Calderon when he’s doubling. Andrea Bargnani. Jamario Moon being too block-happy when guarding Pierce. Token man-defense on Eddie House and Tony Allen despite their hot shooting. Not getting Jason Kapono involved in the offense instead having him worry about how to get himself involved in the offense (you know, coaching stuff). Too perimeter oriented – complete points in the paint domination by Boston. When the pick ‘n roll failed (i.e.: Boston switched or fought through) we had no clue what to do next. No energy, hustle or desire.

Despite all that we could’ve cut the lead to 7 if Kapono had drained that three in the fourth quarter but we all know it wouldn’t have mattered. We couldn’t stop Boston from scoring and had trouble putting two good possessions together so it’s only deserving that we lose. The blame doesn’t go on any one person but the entire team as a whole including the coaching staff who is impotent when faced with the prospect of having to come up with a plan when the jumper isn’t falling. This blog is getting boring because after every loss the same issues come up and I write pretty much the same shit every time. The Indiana win was a fluke, this right here is reality. I concede the Atlantic Division to the Boston Celtics and am on the verge of labeling Andrea Bargnani a bust. It’s this close.

The mini-streak we had going doesn’t amount to a thing when you lose the most meaningful game of the month to your divisional rivals. For the third straight time. At home. In a blowout.

One-Liners:

* andreabargnani.com is available.

* I was wrong in thinking that the Celtics were a three-man team when the season started.

* Sam just needs to add a couple plays to his thin playbook where a shooter like Kapono can get a clean look.

* One-on-one moves and Joey Graham don’t go together.

* At the risk of sounding like a broken record I’ll say that our rotational defense is terrible. The most guilty parties today were Delfino, Calderon and Graham. To a lesser degree Kapono.

* We go through too many offensive droughts that bury us early and we just don’t have a run-killer on our team when Bosh is struggling.

* Not having a regular 8-man rotation is affecting this team’s offense. Don’t give me a PPG stat, those are meaningless.

* I want to take the Caliper test that Bargnani took and see how I do. Damn curious.

Feed.

No energy, no desire. That sums it up. We weren’t ready for this game and Boston was. I’ve come to expect disaster performances from Bargnani. Send him to the NBDL already.

I dream now that we had sent Andrea to Charlotte for Herrmann and Brezic.

What a waste. I wonder if the media will ever confront Colangelo.

There are people who believe Wilt Chamberlain had sex with a woman after every game. Or even before and after each game. Andrea obviously needs to be more like Wilt. Perhaps the Raps could bring in a “big man” coach to help in this regard. Ron Jeremy would look good in a suit standing beside BC and Maurizio. Or if the Raps must go Euro, Rocco Siffredi might be available for the right price.

at least ron jeremy and rocco would teach these guys how to tea bag fools…aka some agression!

as far as the boring posts, i feel the same way man. mine are getting damn boring and hard to write.

a shakeup is necessary: send bargnani to the d-league for some regular minutes, make a trade for someone who can add another dimension of scoring and defense to this team, perferably a starter (you know who i want: marion, kirilenko or artest), and a healthy tj…as good as calderon is, he can’t take over a game, and hit big shots like tj has shown.

Raps Fan dude, the Raptors will never send Bargnani to the D-League, it would kill his trade value and be a total embarrassment for the franchise and Bryan Colangelo. He needs a big man coach more than anything. A FT big man coach.

andrea looked like a bumbling fool in this game. i wonder what is wrong with il mago ? anyho , il mago lived up to his monicker. he managed to make himself disappear.

  7. Raps Fan said

i know they wont, but he really needs to play. the minutes he is getting wont do anything for his development.

i agree on the big man coach, maybe we can get manute bol to come out of retirement…lol

Man the celtics made us look so bad! Jose Calderon had the worst defensive game i’ve ever seen! It seemed like every possesion his man would be wide open, thats unacceptable! And as for Andrea, he is really starting to look like a bad pick but if he played so well last year i dont see why he cant do it again.(oh and there is no way in hell that he should be on the all-star ballot). Kapono is still the best shooter in the league he just doesnt get enough shots. Chris Bosh needs to go to the whole more because his outside game has become about as good as joey graham’s! But on the bright side our next 3 games are against the clippers, the trailblazers and the supersonics, 3 very winnable games!

Lopez, in some fairness to Jose, he was doubling KG and it’s not his fault that his man is open. As the OP said, the rotation should cover for him.

    1. Don’t kid yourself, Boston is a three man team that hides its scrubs in a confidence gamble of D. It will get figured out. You can’t just line people up on the shooters forever. Someone will learn to abuse the switch with some post up players. Or just some late cuts to the hoop. Wait for them to let you get by them, and then send the ball to the cutter baseline. Voila, layup.

    2. If there is no penetration, we’re not winning. We are not a slashing team, get over it. TJ was basically the tonic for today and he was out.

    3. Moon cannot gaurd thick threes (Pierce, Lebron) but Mitchell keeps expecting him to man them up. He has got to be kidding. This more than anything else cost us the game. Pierce beat us up from the first quarter until we got down twenty, and then he took a rest.

    4. Delfino should have started the game and needed more touches–because he’s like the only guy who can drive.

    5. We need to stop p*ssying out. Teams are throwing us to the floor like ragdolls because the refs think we are a team of “diving euros” and they can get away with it. We need to stand up for ourselves in some way (preferably in some illegal hidden way, but either way something needs to be done).

    6. Bosh was fine, he needed some help.

    7. Bargs needs to start again or he’s gonna fade into obscurity soon.

David, I agree with everything you said but point 1. Boston isn’t the deepest team, but they are about 8 or 9 deep. they have the right type of players surrounding their big three, who have a defined role, and do what they have to do. thing of beauty actually. not sold on doc as a great coach, but he is doing the right things with these guys to get the most out of them.

i want to echo your point on moon. i agree 100%. in fact, i really think moon should be 6th or 7th man coming off the bench. delfino should start.

as for bargnanibeing on the allstar ballot, isn’t that for the rookie game? he’s clearly not an allstar yet.

Arsenalist is wrong about Bargnani.. Do you remember PO? Yeah he’s playing shit now, but he’s a 22 big man and his coach seems to hate him: he has psycological problems. He needs more minutes to return taking confidence with the ball and the team. Coach Mitchell instead sucks: the offense needs more than a pick&roll or pick&pop or an isolation! (I agree with David anyway)

  14. arsenalist said

@NickName: How good do you think a player with “psychological problems” can be in this league? Confidence is everything and he seems to lose it very fast. I’m not a proponent of rewarding pathetic play by giving him more minutes. Why can’t he just earn his minutes like everybody else on the team? Look at Hump, look at Moon and even Joey, they work their ass off to get PT but Bargs doesn’t. He just expects the PT to be handed to him which is not how it should be.

I agree that our offense sucks (i.e.: has one play) but that’s not what’s killing Bargnani right now. His “fake the three and take the 20 footer” move is all you need to see to know where his mental makeup and basketball IQ is right now. And how about chasing your own miss or maybe looking up when you drive so you don’t commit an offensive foul EVERY SINGLE TIME. You can’t blame that on Smitch, can you?

  15. Raps Fan said

i agree he has to earn his playing time, but it seems that he just gets thrown into a situation. a better defined role could help. also, it has been suggested bringing in a guy (toni kukoc maybe? i didn’t think of that btw) to coach and mentor him. i think that falls on colangelo.

the injuries didn’t help either. sadly, i have no real suggestion for the guy, which is weird for me.

  16. Raps Fan said

that ‘fake the three and take a 20 footer’ makes me wretch.

  17. Johnn19 said

Everybody take a pill and relax on Bargnani, he will be OK.
Before the injury to his leg he was doing ok, improving on his play of last year. Since he has come back he has struggled to score and play defense, but he made some progress vs LA on defense. The reason he is not playing more is his defense. Rasho did the job vs Kaman as he is a defensive center. Part of Andreas problem is that he has in Europe been used as a SF/PF and Raptors need him to be a Center to take over from Rasho, as that is what BC has envisioned. He is being asked to change his game and is struggling at it. It takes 2/3 years for a young big to adapt to the NBA & Bargnani will be unique in that he will be able to score inside and outside.

  18. Johnn19 said

Regarding Raptors vs Celtics the experience factor is like Boys playing against Men. KG,PP and RA 11/12 years, Posey/House 7/8years
Bosh 4yrs,Moon R, AP 1yr, JC 2yr, AB 1/yr CD 3/yr – just starting to get their defensive game going. Boston the top team in the NBA in pts allowed/FG% allowed/3FG% allowed. Raptors are not the only team that has struggled to score on Boston with a 20 and 2 record.

  19. Coach Designer Handbags…
